Ceiling lights provide the general light a room depends on, and a good one does it without drawing attention to itself. Flush and semi-flush fixtures sit close to the ceiling, which makes them the right choice for bedrooms, hallways, closets and any room where a hanging pendant would feel low.

Frosted and opal glass spreads light evenly, fabric softens it further, and adjustable spots let you aim light at a wall, a picture or a work surface. As a rough guide, choose a fixture whose diameter in inches is close to the room's length plus width in feet: a 12 by 14 foot bedroom suits a fixture of around 26 inches, or a pair of smaller ones.
