About This Light
Aoi means blue in Japanese, a word that has long covered the greens of leaves and deep water as well. The glaze has that colour: a glossy teal over a small faceted ceramic shade, edged at the top with a painted geometric band. A brass-tone socket and a twisted brown fabric cord give it the feel of a well-kept old kitchen light.
The shade is 14 cm (5.5 in) across, so it gives a small, focused pool of light: over a kitchen counter or a sink, low beside a bed, or as one of several in a row over a long table. The bulb sits just below the rim, and a knob switch on the socket turns it on and off.
