Hishi is the Japanese name for the diamond pattern found in old textiles and screens, and this lamp carries it in light: thin strips of natural bamboo, woven by hand into an open diamond lattice and drawn into a rounded, gently barrel-shaped shade that sits on a plain disc of light wood. Switched on, the weave glows a warm amber and casts a net of small diamonds across the wall behind it and the surface beneath.

It is a small lamp, about 8 in tall, made for close quarters: a nightstand, a bookshelf, a windowsill, the corner of a desk or a low console by the door. Its light is soft and atmospheric rather than bright enough to read by, the kind you leave on through the evening for the pattern it draws on a plain plaster or painted wall.
